Experience tends to ...

Experience tends to highlight that they are an option for single dwellings (used by the same people).  However for multi user sites (public toilets) then they rarely live up to expectations.  Odours, fly nuisance, increased maintenance are a few of the common problems.  A quick google search will highlight papers detailing these issues.

One alternative technology is vermifiltration (using worms).  The user will see no difference as they will be faced with the conventional flush toilet and wash hand basin.  The worms are quite at home digesting the sewage and toilet paper, and since they breath air the system is fully aerobic due to their constant burrowing activities.  The effluent from the vermfilter is of good quality and can easily be disposed through a simple soakaway.

My company specialises in these systems and will be In New Delhi 2 - 4th January.  If you are anywhere near there I would be more than happy to meet up with you to discuss our systems.
